Jul 05, 2010 I would replace the receiver-dryer if you want your repair to be successful and the AC components to last. If it’s been leaking for a while, it would probably be a good idea to add the full two ounces of oil, as you’ve probably lost some anyway. There is no way I know of to determine the amount of oil in the system.

Jun 01, 2012 rice400. Participant. If the system has been open or empty for 24 hours total the receiver dryer has to be replaced. It has dessicant (that junk that comes in little packets and says do not eat) which absorbs the moisture and it becomes saturated so the receiver dryer must be replaced. What I would do in this case is, get a new drier, flush all the components in the system, make sure the compressor has the proper amount of oil, add the proper amount of oil to each component, install new O-rings to the components, pull a vacuum on the system, and then recharge it with refrigerant.
